Are amethysts easy to scratch, and why do the birthstone contain white lines/streaks?
I got a new birthstone amethyst necklace and I'm scared to ruin it. I don't want to scratch it and keep it stored in it's box when not in use. Can natural things (such as metal, zippers, etc.) scratch the stone? Also, why does this type of gem contain white lines when it is held up to a light?

Amethysts are fairly strong so don't worry too much about them breaking. As for scratching, yes they can be scratched but again I would not worry too much about it. if you worry to much and don't wear it what is the point in having it really.
As for the white lines i can not answer. How is it cut?
