What are the rules about returning an engagement ring?

I've heard three different rules, are these accurate? If not, what are the guidelines about the rules of the engagement ring?

Rule 1: If the giver (usually the would-be groom) calls off the wedding the Receiver (usually the would-be bride) keeps the ring.

Rule 2: If the Receiver calls off the wedding the ring is returned to the giver.

Rule 3: If the relationship ends on mutual terms the ring is sold and the money is split evenly.

Ms. Manners would tell you the first two rules are accurate. I have never heard the third rule put that way. My understanding is that if the relationship ends mutually, the person whom bore the financial responsibility keeps the ring (ie. if the ring was purchased with mutual monies I could see a sell and split situation).
