For many of us crafters, handmade jewelry is little more than a hobby. But, it's possible to turn that weekend craft project into a business and enter into the broader jewelry market.

If you're considering launching a hand-crafted jewelry business, keep reading for 8 essential tips.

1. If you're just starting out, try learning by using kits or classes. Do-it-yourself (DIY) kits provide you with all the materials you need and a foundation for learning the basic structure of jewelry.

However, if community college classes are available in your area, they can also be a great way to build your skill set with an expert teacher on hand to answer questions.

2. Mix and match your materials. Constructing pieces exclusively out of fine materials and expensive stones will push your product into a different price stratosphere, and launching a new line at a high price point can be difficult, at best.

Keep your prices lower in the beginning by mixing finer materials with less-expensive ones. For example, try matching a fine stone with a silk bead cord, rather than a gold chain. And resist the temptation to jump into steeper diamond or pearl jewelry too quickly.

3. Get involved in your local jewelry community. Get out to jewelry-related events, set up tables at local craft fairs and bazaars, and generally work hard at getting your face and your brand out there.

These contacts can lead to store purchases, great word-of-mouth advertising and even on-the-spot sales that become the bread and butter of your business.

4. Look for a wholesale supplier. You don't want to be buying your materials at premium retail prices. Instead, look for a wholesale supplier that can help you reduce your costs.

5. Invest in the best tools you can afford. Jewelry-making requires specific tools for jobs like crimping and handling. Always buy the best tools that you can afford.

6. Immerse yourself in the jewelry market. Read trade magazines, make regular visits to retailers and keep your eye on jewelry trends. The uninformed designer is the out-of-date designer.

7. Get a web site. Even if you're not planning to sell online, a web site is going to be your first point of contact with many of your customers. Keep it updated, fresh, and attractive.

8. When approaching shops, always look for your target market. Instead of randomly hitting all the stores in your area, approach stores that sell pieces similar to your preferences or that exhibit a similar aesthetic. You're more likely to make that sale because your pieces will be snatched up by target customers.

I've been really interested in original jewelry lately. One thing that I've been really wanting is to get some jewelry with Chinese symbols. I'm not sure why but Chinese symbols just seem sort of classy and somewhat exotic to me. I have no idea what symbol I would get or even what type of jewelry I would get. I want to take my time and really think about it because I think it'll be a really great addition to the jewelry I already have. It's cool to think about having a piece that will have something with a personal meaning to me on it.

Ever wonder why when you go to the store there are Desk Lamps, table lamps, and pool table lamps and yet they all look so similar? The varying names are more about the purpose of the lamp and the size than the actual differences.

You’ve got your desk and need additional lighting for those late nights or for the tedious work that needs to be done. Desk lamps work well because of their small size and the convenience that they offer in portability. Usually shorter with small lamp shades or they may have a flexible neck and a non-removable shade to help direct the light better. Desk lamps have often become a standard in most home and business offices.

There are also table lamps that come in so many different sizes and are more based on the size of the table than the lamp itself. These get used in the living room and sometimes are also known as reading lamps. Or in the bedrooms as night stand lamps. A nice feature with these is that they all look so different and come in so many fun designs to match any room.

Finally, the pool table lamps that don’t necessarily have to be on a pool table are not even used on pool tables always. These are short with two lamps heads that come out both sides of the stand. These sometimes can be seen on office desk because of the unique style and interesting look of them. Pool table lamps are a great addition to any room and could be used near a pool table, just not necessarily on it!

The differences between these lamps are so minor that they are practically interchangeable. They are more about the look and need then the name itself.
